| ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੁ ਸਰੀਰ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਥੁ ਇਕੁ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥ |
| Nānak mer sarīr kā ik rath ik rathvāhu. |
| O Nanak, the soul of the body has one chariot and one charioteer. |
| ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਫੇਰਿ ਵਟਾਈਅਹਿ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੁਝਹਿ ਤਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Jug jug fer vatā▫ī▫ah gi▫ānī bujẖėh ṯāhi. |
| In age after age they change; the spiritually wise understand this. |
| ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਰਥੁ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥ |
| Saṯjug rath sanṯokẖ kā ḏẖaram agai rathvāhu. |
| In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, contentment was the chariot and righteousness the charioteer. |
| ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਰਥੁ ਜਤੈ ਕਾ ਜੋਰੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥ |
| Ŧareṯai rath jaṯai kā jor agai rathvāhu. |
| In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, celibacy was the chariot and power the charioteer. |
| ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਰਥੁ ਤਪੈ ਕਾ ਸਤੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥ |
| Ḏu▫āpur rath ṯapai kā saṯ agai rathvāhu. |
| In the Brass Age of Dwaapar Yuga, penance was the chariot and truth the charioteer. |
| ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਰਥੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਾ ਕੂੜੁ ਅਗੈ ਰਥਵਾਹੁ ॥੧॥ |
| Kaljug rath agan kā kūṛ agai rathvāhu. ॥1॥ |
| In the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, fire is the chariot and falsehood the charioteer. ॥1॥ |

| First Mehl: |
| ਸਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਸੇਤੰਬਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਸਚ ਮਹਿ ਆਛੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਹੇ ॥ |
| Sām kahai seṯambar su▫āmī sacẖ mėh ācẖẖai sācẖ rahe. |
| The Sama Veda says that the Lord Master is robed in white; in the Age of Truth, everyone desired Truth, abided in Truth, |
| ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥ |
| Sabẖ ko sacẖ samāvai. |
| and was merged in the Truth. |
| ਰਿਗੁ ਕਹੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ |
| Rig kahai rahi▫ā bẖarpūr. |
| The Rig Veda says that God is permeating and pervading everywhere; |
| ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵਾ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਰੁ ॥ |
| Rām nām ḏevā mėh sūr. |
| among the deities, the Lord's Name is the most exalted. |
| ਨਾਇ ਲਇਐ ਪਰਾਛਤ ਜਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Nā▫e la▫i▫ai parācẖẖaṯ jāhi. |
| Chanting the Name, sins depart; |
| ਨਾਨਕ ਤਉ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Nānak ṯa▫o mokẖanṯar pāhi. |
| O Nanak, then, one obtains salvation. |
| ਜੁਜ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਰਿ ਛਲੀ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਾਵਲਿ ਕਾਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨੁ ਜਾਦਮੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| Juj mėh jor cẖẖalī cẖanḏrāval kānĥ krisan jāḏam bẖa▫i▫ā. |
| In the Jujar Veda, Kaan Krishna of the Yaadva tribe seduced Chandraavali by force. |
| ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁ ਗੋਪੀ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਬਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| Pārjāṯ gopī lai ā▫i▫ā binḏrāban mėh rang kī▫ā. |
| He brought the Elysian Tree for his milk-maid, and revelled in Brindaaban. |
| ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਅਥਰਬਣੁ ਹੂਆ ਨਾਉ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਅਲਹੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ |
| Kal mėh beḏ atharbaṇ hū▫ā nā▫o kẖuḏā▫ī alhu bẖa▫i▫ā. |
| In the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, the Atharva Veda became prominent; Allah became the Name of God. |
| ਨੀਲ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਲੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਤੁਰਕ ਪਠਾਣੀ ਅਮਲੁ ਕੀਆ ॥ |
| Nīl basṯar le kapṛe pahire ṯurak paṯẖāṇī amal kī▫ā. |
| Men began to wear blue robes and garments; Turks and Pat'haans assumed power. |
| ਚਾਰੇ ਵੇਦ ਹੋਏ ਸਚਿਆਰ ॥ |
| Cẖāre veḏ ho▫e sacẖiār. |
| The four Vedas each claim to be true. |
| ਪੜਹਿ ਗੁਣਹਿ ਤਿਨ੍ਹ੍ਹ ਚਾਰ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥ |
| Paṛėh guṇėh ṯinĥ cẖār vīcẖār. |
| Reading and studying them, four doctrines are found. |
| ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨੀਚੁ ਸਦਾਏ ॥ |
| Bẖā▫o bẖagaṯ kar nīcẖ saḏā▫e. |
| With loving devotional worship, abiding in humility, |
| ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖੰਤਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੨॥ |
| Ŧa▫o Nānak mokẖanṯar pā▫e. ॥2॥ |
| O Nanak, salvation is attained. ॥2॥ |

| Pauree: |
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
| Saṯgur vitahu vāri▫ā jiṯ mili▫ai kẖasam samāli▫ā. |
| I am a sacrifice to the True Guru; meeting Him, I have come to cherish the Lord Master. |
| ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਦੀਆ ਇਨ੍ਹ੍ਹੀ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
| Jin kar upḏes gi▫ān anjan ḏī▫ā inĥī neṯrī jagaṯ nihāli▫ā. |
| He has taught me and given me the healing ointment of spiritual wisdom, and with these eyes, I behold the world. |
| ਖਸਮੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲਗੇ ਡੁਬੇ ਸੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਿਆ ॥ |
| Kẖasam cẖẖod ḏūjai lage dube se vaṇjāri▫ā. |
| Those dealers who abandon their Lord and Master and attach themselves to another, are drowned. |
| ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਕਿਨੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥ |
| Saṯgurū hai bohithā virlai kinai vīcẖāri▫ā. |
| The True Guru is the boat, but few are those who realize this. |
| ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਿਆ ॥੧੩॥ |
| Kar kirpā pār uṯāri▫ā. ॥13॥ |
| Granting His Grace, He carries them across. ॥13॥ |

| ਸਿੰਮਲ ਰੁਖੁ ਸਰਾਇਰਾ ਅਤਿ ਦੀਰਘ ਅਤਿ ਮੁਚੁ ॥ |
| Simmal rukẖ sarā▫irā aṯ ḏīragẖ aṯ mucẖ. |
| The simmal tree is straight as an arrow; it is very tall, and very thick. |
| ਓਇ ਜਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਆਸ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਨਿਰਾਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ॥ |
| O▫e jė āvahi ās kar jāhi nirāse kiṯ. |
| But those birds which visit it hopefully, depart disappointed. |
| ਫਲ ਫਿਕੇ ਫੁਲ ਬਕਬਕੇ ਕੰਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਪਤ ॥ |
| Fal fike ful bakbake kamm na āvahi paṯ. |
| Its fruits are tasteless, its flowers are nauseating, and its leaves are useless. |
| ਮਿਠਤੁ ਨੀਵੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਗੁਣ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਤਤੁ ॥ |
| Miṯẖaṯ nīvī nānkā guṇ cẖang▫ā▫ī▫ā ṯaṯ. |
| Sweetness and humility, O Nanak, are the essence of virtue and goodness. |
| ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਨਿਵੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਪਰ ਕਉ ਨਿਵੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ |
| Sabẖ ko nivai āp ka▫o par ka▫o nivai na ko▫e. |
| Everyone bows down to himself; no one bows down to another. |
| ਧਰਿ ਤਾਰਾਜੂ ਤੋਲੀਐ ਨਿਵੈ ਸੁ ਗਉਰਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ |
| Ḏẖar ṯārājū ṯolī▫ai nivai so ga▫urā ho▫e. |
| When something is placed on the balancing scale and weighed, the side which descends is heavier. |
| ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਦੂਣਾ ਨਿਵੈ ਜੋ ਹੰਤਾ ਮਿਰਗਾਹਿ ॥ |
| Aprāḏẖī ḏūṇā nivai jo hanṯā miragāhi. |
| The sinner, like the deer hunter, bows down twice as much. |
| ਸੀਸਿ ਨਿਵਾਇਐ ਕਿਆ ਥੀਐ ਜਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਕੁਸੁਧੇ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ |
| Sīs nivā▫i▫ai ki▫ā thī▫ai jā riḏai kusuḏẖe jāhi. ॥1॥ |
| But what can be achieved by bowing the head, when the heart is impure? ॥1॥ |

| First Mehl: |
| ਪੜਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥ |
| Paṛ pusṯak sanḏẖi▫ā bāḏaʼn. |
| You read your books and say your prayers, and then engage in debate; |
| ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥ |
| Sil pūjas bagul samāḏẖaʼn. |
| you worship stones and sit like a stork, pretending to be in Samaadhi. |
| ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠ ਬਿਭੂਖਣ ਸਾਰੰ ॥ |
| Mukẖ jẖūṯẖ bibẖūkẖaṇ sāraʼn. |
| With your mouth you utter falsehood, and you adorn yourself with precious decorations; |
| ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥ |
| Ŧaraipāl ṯihāl bicẖāraʼn. |
| you recite the three lines of the Gayatri three times a day. |
| ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥ |
| Gal mālā ṯilak lilātaʼn. |
| Around your neck is a rosary, and on your forehead is a sacred mark; |
| ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥ |
| Ḏu▫e ḏẖoṯī basṯar kapātaʼn. |
| upon your head is a turban, and you wear two loin cloths. |
| ਜੇ ਜਾਣਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ |
| Je jāṇas barahmaʼn karmaʼn. |
| If you knew the nature of God, |
| ਸਭਿ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚਉ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ |
| Sabẖ fokat niscẖa▫o karmaʼn. |
| you would know that all of these beliefs and rituals are in vain. |
| ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਧਿਆਵੈ ॥ |
| Kaho Nānak nihcẖa▫o ḏẖi▫āvai. |
| Says Nanak, meditate with deep faith; |
| ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਵਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੨॥ |
| viṇ saṯgur vāt na pāvai. ॥2॥ |
| without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ॥2॥ |

| ਕਪੜੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਛਡਿ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Kapaṛ rūp suhāvaṇā cẖẖad ḏunī▫ā anḏar jāvṇā. |
| Abandoning the world of beauty, and beautiful clothes, one must depart. |
| ਮੰਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਪਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Manḏā cẖanga āpṇā āpe hī kīṯā pāvṇā. |
| He obtains the rewards of his good and bad deeds. |
| ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀਏ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਦੇ ਰਾਹਿ ਭੀੜੈ ਅਗੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ॥ |
| Hukam kī▫e man bẖāvḏe rāhi bẖīṛai agai jāvṇā. |
| He may issue whatever commands he wishes, but he shall have to take to the narrow path hereafter. |
